Alternattiva Demokratika will be screening the documentary Malta: A Birdless Island, which was shown in the European Parliament earlier last month.

The documentary was filmed in Malta between April 17 and May 5 this year by a media company called Malta Media, consisting of a number of university students, with the help of Dutch TV producers. The production of the documentary was financed by Bird Protection Belgium. The society is using the documentary in their campaign to collect signatures that will be presented to the European Parliament to try and stop spring hunting in Malta.

"The documentary clearly shows the hunting and trapping situation in Malta," AD's international secretary Ralph Cassar said. "It shows how the countryside has been taken over by a few people to the detriment of thousands of Maltese families who are unable to enjoy the little countryside that is left," he said.

"Hunting and trapping are ruining what is common environmental heritage. In a small country such as Malta, such activities are detrimental to the quality of life of the Maltese citizen and residents of Malta," Mr Cassar said.

He added that AD would continue lobbying EU institutions to ensure that spring hunting is stopped.

The documentary will be screened during ADs annual summer BBQ, which this year will take place at Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija on Wednesday.
