Alternattiva Demokratika leader Harry Vassallo insisted today that rent laws needed to be reformed and there had to be an end to the current situation where property rents were inherited.
Dr Vassallo said AD was the only party speaking about this issue.
He said that where tenants deserved protection, landlords should be suitably compensated by the government. It was not fair that landlords ended up shouldering the burdens of social housing.
Dr Vassallo also insisted that measures needed to be taken to reduce the number of vacant dwellings, currently numbering 53,000.
The AD leader said the PN was mentioning rent law reform without going into specifics. It was also promising lower tax on controlled rents. This, he said, was insulting to landlords who were forced to accept rents of just €40 annually. This would be a saving of 50c for those who were being denied the use of thier own property.
The MLP, meanwhile, was silent on this issue.
