Alternattiva Demokratika has called on MEPA to intervene to stop the demolition of Villa Degiorgio in the heart of Sliema.
The party said the demolition of the villa and redevelopment of the site was contrary to MEPA regulations.
Michael Briguglio, AD councillor in Sliema, said that both Sliema Local Council and Alternattiva Demokratika were supporting Sliema residents in their objection to proposed development in High Street and Dingli Street .
"The development is within Sliema's Urban Conservation Area, and has been heavily criticised by MEPA's Auditor. It cannot and shouldn't be justified according to planning regulations. Besides, it will ruin the area given that it will go straight into back gardens at High Street, Dingli Street, Borg Olivier Street and Victoria Junction, whilst also increasing pressure on traffic in an already congested area".
Prof Arnold Cassola, AD chairman, in a statement said it was high time that MEPA took account of the statements of its own Auditor and of objections made by the Sliema Local Council and residents. The fact that the development was characterised by two applications – one of which has already been approved – might result in another situation where development works took place before an appeal was heard.
