Senior personnel from the Armed Forces of Malta led by Brig. Martin Xuereb, this morning attended thankgiving Mass at St John’s CoCathedral as part of the army’s 40th anniversary celebration.

The concelebration was led by Gozo bishop Mario Grech and included the participation of AFM chaplain Joseph Meli, past chaplains, as well as the chaplains of the Corradino Correction Facilities and the police force.

The congregration was led by acting President Anton Tabone and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and also included personnel from the AFM’s five units.

Mass was preceeded by a guard of honour. The AFM colours were then marched in slow time at the Cathedral and placed on the altar during the concelebration.

Former servicemen of the Malta Land Force, Royal Malta Artillery and Royal Engineers were also present.

Later today, long service and efficiency medals are to be awarded to serving AFM personnel.

A mini open day is being held at Mgarr Harbour tomorrow and a reunion for retired officers is being held at the AFM officers’ mess in the evening.

An open day is being held at Luqa Barracks on Sunday from 11 a.m.
