This weekend the Armed Forces of Malta will be celebrating the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the regular element of the force under the Maltese government.
The event will be marked tomorrow with the publication of a commemorative 56-page magazine called On Parade issued by MediaMaker in association with the AFM. The magazine will be distributed with The Sunday Times.
On Parade will feature articles on the island's defence and security scenario, the history of the AFM and the tasks and challenges of the force.
These include the maritime rescue of illegal migrants and the modernisation of infantry units to tackle special operations. The publication highlights such aspects as recruitment, training, equipment, women in the force and the role of the voluntary reserves.
Also tomorrow, the AFM will hold an Open Day at Luqa Barracks between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Such events have proved popular over the past few years, with almost 8,000 visitors turning up last year to view activities and information stands about the various AFM units.
Weapons and other equipment used by the AFM ranging from helicopters to anti-aircraft guns, trucks, machine guns and bomb disposal robots will be on display.
Entrance to Luqa Barracks is near the former airport terminal.
