Forty officers from the navies of 12 countries were in Malta last week for the final planning conference of the US Navy's 6th Fleet training exercise in preparation for Phoenix Express 2008.

The Armed Forces of Malta, which once again participated in this exercise, hosted the conference at its headquarters.

Phoenix Express is a two-week long exercise in the Mediterranean aimed at increasing regional maritime awareness and improving maritime security and safety through better information.

The multilateral training of the participating nations is designed to strengthen emerging and enduring US and European maritime partnerships with a number of north African states.

This year's edition will take place primarily to the northeast of the island in international waters between Malta and Sicily.
