Three Maltese men whose boat ran out of fuel were brought to safety by an AFM patrol boat on Saturday, the AFM said.

Their 14-foot power boat was drifting some 27 nautical miles northwest of Luqa when it was spotted by a private plane.

Also on Saturday, the 39-year-old master of an Italian fishing boat, the Aliseo, was ferried to St Luke's Hospital by an Italian Military Mission helicopter, needing treatment for a heart attack.

The fishing boat was about 51 nautical miles south of Malta.
