The AFM is to buy a third Augusta Bell AW139 helicopter, having recently signed a €14m contract, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said this morning.

The brand new twin-engined helicopters are gradually replacing the AFM's aging Alouette helicopters which have been the workhorses of the air wing since the 1980s.

The acquisition of the new helicopters is being partly financed by the European Union. 

Mr Abela made his comments when he addressed a passing out parade of 70 AFM soldiers on completion of their 20-week basic training.

The minister said new radios and bullet-proof vests are also being bought, for some €250,000.

The minister said another 100 soldiers are currently being recruited. By the end of this year, 500 would have joined the disciplined forces.
