Flag bearers from each European Union member state, including Malta, were invited to participate in the annual Netherlands National Tattoo, held between the end of August and the beginning of September, in the city of Breda.

Malta was represented by Lieutenant Mark Mallia, flag bearer and officer in charge of the AFM team, Sergeant Charles Mizzi, bass tuba player, Sergeant Martin Vella, baritone and euphonium player, and Gunner Jesmond Fenech, B-flat clarinet player.

Lt Mallia, appointed officer-in-charge of all flag bearers, was given the charge of bearing the European Union flag.

Since the Netherlands holds the chair of the European Union, and this year's edition was the 50th tattoo or the Golden jubilee tattoo, it was thought that a band of the European Union, made up of musicians from member states, should be formed for the occasion.

The Queen of the Netherlands attended the 10 shows, which attracted audiences of up to 4,000 per night.
