The Armed Forces rescued three people - two men and a woman - who were lost at sea while they were on a fishing trip after the compass of their speedboat developed a fault on Tuesday.

The AFM said a helicopter was dispatched on a sea search in the north west of Malta after a distress call was received from the passengers.

The boat was spotted some 14 miles northwest off Malta in international waters.

A search and rescue launch went to the area and the boat was assisted to reach land.
