A consignment of light weapons and ammunition donated by China was yesterday delivered to the Armed Forces of Malta.

Security measures were in force during the unloading of the matériel in Grand Harbour, the AFM said.

The donation means that for the first time since it came into being in 1970, the AFM will have one standardised individual rifle for all its soldiers.

The donation is the result of an agreement reached between the AFM and the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China following an official visit to China by the AFM commander two years ago.

The official handing-over ceremony is to take place early next week.
