SLIEMA WANDERERS 2
Sansone 33
Agius 88
FLORIANA 2
Cabral 15
Fontanella 44
Edmund Agius came to Sliema’s rescue as the battling midfielder headed home a late equaliser to earn his team a point in a fascinating derby at the National Stadium.
Floriana drew first blood on 15 minutes and the goal came from a defensive howler from the Wanderers.
Sliema goalkeeper Glenn Zammit, in an attempt to intercept a long pass towards his area, bumped into Kurt Shaw and Juninho Cabral was the quickest to react as he turned past Stefano Bianciardi and deposit the ball into an empth net.
The Wanderers soon recovered from that scare and managed to equalise on 33 minutes. Temile put Ricardo Correa clear on the left and his low cross not cleared by Jurgen Pisani and Michele Sansone was on hand to fire home.
Floriana restored the lead on 44 minutes when Sebastian Nayar nodded the ball into the path of the sprinting Fontanella who moved past Shaw and slid the ball past Zammit.
The Wanderers stepped up their ante as Floriana looked happy to administer their lead and that in the end came back to haunt them.
In fact with two minutes to go Mintoff stormed through from the right and chipped the ball into the path of Edmund Agius who headed the ball past Akpan to the delight of the Sliema fans.
BOV Player of the match Mario Fontanella (Floriana).
