Neil Agius set a new national record in the 800 metres freestyle during yesterday's time trials organized by the Aquatic Sports Association at the National Pool in Tal-Qroqq.

Agius completed the distance in eight minutes 52.11 seconds to slash more than a second from his own previous best of 8:53.14 which he set in Montreal in 2005.

For Agius, yesterday's result will be a huge boost of confidence as he continues his preparations for this year's Games of the Small States of Europe to be held in Cyprus between June 1 and 6.
