Teachers want AI and air-conditioning as union publishes election wishlist
MUT urges next government to put Maltese language and culture at the centre of students’ educational journey
The Malta Union of Teachers has published its election wish list, including both high and low-tech proposals.
Among the 25 proposals, the union also called on the next government to put Maltese language and culture at the centre of students’ educational journey.
The union also called for the setting up of a languages and communication secondary school, similar to the current National Sports School and the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School. The school would serve as "a hub for the teaching, learning and promotion of languages and communication".
Another proposal calls for artificial intelligence to be included as part of the curriculum of compulsory education.
On the other hand, the union is also proposing a rethink of the use of technology tools in the classroom, to “limit the student-dependency on digital devices especially in the early years of schooling.”
Cutting-edge technology aside, the union also put forward more practical, day-to-day suggestions, such as a nationwide project to equip all classrooms with air-conditioning.
The MUT also wants the Commissioner for Education to be appointed from the education sector itself.
“Similarly, all education boards and councils must be led by personnel from the education sector.”
More separation from politics is also given priority, with the union saying the sector should be governed by a permanent commission independent from politics, “which ensures a long-term vision based on research, knowledge and expertise.”
Life beyond school hours is also given a mention. The MUT wants investment in after-school programmes personnel to “provide a meaningful educational experience to students beyond formal schooling.”
