I refer to the highly disturbing report (April 29) about the killing of a pet dog kept in the quarantine kennels at Luqa.

The chief government vet is quoted as saying: "As a policy, dogs brought without any documentation from North African countries were put to sleep, because of a fear they might be infected with rabies".

Is this not why there are quarantine kennels at Luqa - to assess as to whether or not animals are free from rabies!

Are we no longer assessing medical conditions by the book, and returning to ancient witchdoctors who go by `fear and suspicion`!

The poor dog`s owner showed copies of his pet`s record of vaccination from Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital, Singapore, a rabies inoculation certificate from a French vet, and an import licence signed by the chief government vet, Dr Lino Vella!

This sounds like the usual incompetence as regards `official paperwork` in these departments but a loving pet`s life was taken as a result of someone`s negligence, and someone has to answer for that!
