Alex Borg launches PN leadership bid, seeks 'generational change'
He is the second candidate vying for the PN's top post after Adrian Delia
Gozitan MP Alex Borg on Tuesday became the second candidate to announce a bid for the leadership of the Nationalist Party, challenging Adrian Delia who announced his interest on Monday.
The move is likely to come as a surprise within party ranks, as the two - known for their close ties - had agreed just last week not to run against each other, according to party sources.
Borg, 29, a lawyer, made the announcement evening through a social media post, saying the PN needed a generational change and a winning mentality.
"As a Nationalist Party, we have a duty to convey a forward-looking message by offering hope and a vision for the future of our country," he said.
He observed that a substantial part of the population did not see its aspirations in the PN, or indeed, any political party.
Should he be elected leader, he would seek to meet such people's aspirations.
"I entered the political fray to serve, not to be served, and that is what I intend to continue doing. I am taking this step out of a sense of duty, responsibility and humility," he said.
Borg first contested a general election in 2022, winning 6,100 votes on the 13th district (Gozo).
The next PN leader will be replacing Bernard Grech who stepped down two weeks ago with less than two years to go to the next general election.
The process to choose the new leader is expected to be completed by September. Should Borg be elected, he will be the youngest to ever lead the party.
