Alex Borg pledges ‘better Gozo’ as PN opens Workers’ Day events
PN leader says party will modernise Gozo and create better-quality jobs there
Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg pledged on Friday to make Gozo a national priority, telling Gozitans that his “contract” with them was to deliver better jobs, improved connectivity and a higher quality of life.
Speaking at the Grand Hotel Gozo in Għajnsielem during the party’s first political activity linked to Workers’ Day, Borg said the Nationalist Party was the “vehicle” through which Gozo could move forward.
Borg, who is Gozitan, said he understood the daily difficulties people on the island faced but argued that Gozo also had the potential to offer more opportunities to workers, businesses, young people and elderly residents.
He said a future Nationalist government would seek to modernise Gozo, strengthen its infrastructure, attract new companies and create better-quality jobs.
Connectivity had to become a national priority, he said. Earlier that day, Borg blasted the government mass transport plan – a 25km rail system running on the Maltese mainland from the airport to St Paul’s Bay – as “half-baked”.
The PN leader said that while he recognised improvements made in Gozo in recent years, the island still faced challenges that could be turned into opportunities.
“The Partit Nazzjonalista is a vehicle for Gozo to move forward, and my contract with you is this: a better Gozo for workers and for Gozitans,” Borg said.
The event also included speeches by shadow minister for Gozo Chris Said and PN Gozitan election candidates Norma Camilleri, Beppe Galea, Luke Said and Frank Anthony Tabone. Said has indicated he does not intend to contest the next election.
A discussion was also held with people from different sectors in Gozo, covering health and inclusion, sport, affordable housing and tourism.
The PN’s Workers’ Day activities continue on Saturday with a conference on work organised by the party’s Moviment Solidarjetà Ħaddiema at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, which Borg will also address.
Borg is due back in Gozo on Sunday morning for a political activity from the Qrib Tagħkom series in Triq Palma, Victoria.
