Alex Borg pledges to build new hospitals and make all cancer medication free

Borg has also promised to close the Mount Carmel mental health hospital and open centres within communities instead

Alex Borg on Tuesday pledged to build a “network of hospitals” and make all cancer medication free for patients if the Nationalist Party is elected to government.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters in front of Nationalist Party headquarters in the first rally of the election campaign, Borg said a PN government would build new hospitals in Gozo and in the North of Malta and expand the Ċensu Moran health hub in Paola into a fully-fledged hospital.

“We will also expand and improve Mater Dei Hospital,” Borg said, the purpose being to make the health service more efficient and cut waiting times.

A PN government, he said, would also build a new “centre of excellence” to promote well-being, prevent illness and help in rehabilitation.

The PN leader also pledged to make all cancer medication free for patients, a policy Borg said was particularly close to his heart.

“My father died of cancer after a six year battle, some of the medicine he needed to take cost thousands”, Borg said.

“Patients and families already suffer from the physical and mental challenges that cancer brings, they shouldn’t also have to cope with financial struggles”.

Borg pledged to run a positive electoral campaign and not personally attack anyone.

He said a government under his leadership would be open to work with everyone regardless of their political belief.

“The door to Castille will be open to all the people,” he said.

Borg said that many of the problems Labour had promised to solve at the last election still persisted, including traffic congestion, overpopulation, and housing affordability.

Borg said that he and his partner Sarah Bajada were themselves struggling to find a property they could afford.

He also pointed out that the promised national parks were still under consultation. And four years ago Labour said Maltese entrepreneurs would pay 25 per cent tax and nothing had happened.
