Alex Borg summons MPs to discuss PN's chief justice position

Justice Minister told Times of Malta government proposed Consuelo Scerri Herrera for the post

The PN parliamentary group will be holding an emergency meeting late on Wednesday to discuss the government's choice of Malta's next chief justice.

Justice Minister Jonathan Attard earlier told Times of Malta the government had proposed Consuelo Scerri Herrera for the post.

"I summoned an emergency parliamentary group meeting for tonight and will be heading there after this interview," Borg told Jon Mallia's Każin.

"I will be telling our MPs what we [Borg and Abela] discussed, and then we will issue a statement," he said, skirting questions on whether he agreed with the PL's proposal, saying he respected "confidentiality".

Outgoing chief justice Mark Chetcuti turns 68 on February 4.

The chief justice is the head of Malta’s judiciary. Besides hearing some cases, the chief justice also decides which members of the judiciary hear which sort of cases.

To be appointed to the highest position in the judiciary, Scerri Herrera, 61, will need the backing of the opposition. Under new legal provisions, she will need to have the backing of two-thirds of the House.
