Alex Borg urges immediate EU action on Med threats, including Russian tanker

PN leader addresses Brussels summit of EPP which is marking its 50th anniversary

Alex Borg on Thursday urged concrete and immediate EU action over threats directly impacting the Mediterranean, such as the stricken Russian shadow fleet tanker Arctic Metagaz.

The vessel has continued drifting away from Malta towards Libya, and by Wednesday was over 100 nautical miles from Malta’s shores.

The PN leader was addressing an EPP Summit in Brussels. The European People’s Party is marking its 50th anniversary.

Borg stressed the importance of stronger EU action on the Arctic Metagaz, which he said was posing environmental and security risks in the Mediterranean.

A small country like Malta could not afford to remain passive in the face of such situations, he said, adding that there was a need for more effective European coordination to safeguard our seas, the security of supplies, and the environment.

Borg said Malta could be a credible voice at the European level by promoting a balance between collective security and respect for its fundamental principles.

The EPP summit discussed the latest international developments, particularly those concerning the Middle East and Iran, Ukraine and Europe’s economic growth and competitiveness.

For the first time, the EPP summit was attended by leaders of EPP-affiliated parties from outside the EU.

Among others, Borg met President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
