Alleged shoplifter identified through CCTV footage

Prosecutors say she stole €1,500 worth of products over a month

An alleged shoplifter stole some €1,500 worth of products between March and April before being identified through CCTV, a court heard on Monday.

Details were given during the arraignment of Ilona Bartolo, 38, who pleaded not guilty to six cases of shoplifting in Qormi, Sliema and Birkirkara. The targeted outlets included Greens Supermarket, Welbee's and Homemate

She allegedly stole accessories for mobile phones, cameras and other items.

She also attempted a robbery from Welbee's in St Julian's.

The woman was identified from CCTV footage and arrested on Sunday afternoon.

A request for bail was denied, with the prosecution explaining that the accused had a drug addiction and lacked stable employment and residence.

Magistrate Tanya Sammut presided. Police Inspectors Ylenia Maria Xerri, Roderick Attard and Elton Buckingham prosecuted. Lawyers Arthur Azzopardi, Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri appeared for the accused.
