Police Inspector Jason Francis Sultana was yesterday expected to be charged with corruption and embezzlement but he could not be arraigned as he was ill.
Mr Sultana, who was stationed in Sliema, has been suspended from the force in connection with the charges, which relate to offences allegedly committed over a number of months.
He is being charged with unlawfully demanding payment for services under the guise of his official authority
While the exact details of the case are not yet clear, the officer is being charged with unlawfully demanding payment for services under the guise of his official authority.
He is also charged with extortion, bribery and taking a private interest in matters in which he had been entrusted with the issuing of orders, apart from committing crimes he was in duty bound to prevent. The inspector was due to appear before Magistrate Anthony Vella, but his lawyer informed the court that his client was unwell and unable to attend.
The case was postponed until December.
