Representing your country at an international sporting event is an honour. All the long hours of hard training and innumerable sacrifices have led to this moment. Our athletes and officials at the forthcoming Games of the Small States of Europe in Cyprus are now being told they have to sacrifice their right to vote for the European Parliament elections.

The Nationalist Party wants to change the law so that they can vote. The Labour Party proposed they vote on Election Day by having a ballot box taken to Cyprus. Changing the law can lead to abuse so if the PN really have the athletes' welfare at heart the solution is an easy one. Let us not try to obtain political mileage from an unfortunate situation.

And please, do not insult the sporting community's intelligence by saying that voting on Election Day will be a distraction.

It is obvious that whoever uttered such a statement never experienced top-level sports as an athlete and/or as an official.
