Aloysians beat Kavallieri to move joint second

Aloysians emerged winners from this thrilling match to move joint second in the standings. Kavallieri seemed to be the stronger side in the first half. However, Aloysians' experience prevailed after the change of ends to clinch the points for the defending champions.

The match was off to an electrifying pace. Kavallieri had a good spell and led 4-1 at one stage. But Aloysians soon settled down and by half-time they were only one goal down - 12-13.

In the second half, Roberto Ragonesi produced a superb display for Aloysians as he rifled goals in from all angles. He scored seven out of his side's 11 second-half goals to seal it for Aloysians.

La Salle, on 12 points in the standings, benefited most from this result as they now have a six-point lead over Kavallieri and Aloysians.

La Salle maintained their unbeaten record after four outings even though they were without national team goalkeeper Andrew Mifsud against Salesians who fought hard and played a spirited match.

La Salle were sloppy in attack and fumbled a number of fast breaks and also missed two penalties, the first in the league.

Salesians goalkeeper Stefan Vancell had a great day between the posts. He managed a string of fine saves to stop La Salle from earning a run-away win.

Salesians' determination paid off at the beginning of the second half when they levelled the score and earned the lead after scoring three goals without reply.

However, in the last 10 minutes La Salle managed a 6-0 run to dash Salesians' hopes of earning their first points.

This was the first match of 2004. La Salle Vitality found no difficulty in maintaining their winning streak with a sound win over Salesians.

The protagonist here was Louise Micallef. She had an excellent game, scoring seven goals for La Salle.

Salesians shocked La Salle with a strong opening. However, La Salle scored six times in quick succession for a cushion 7-2 lead at half-time.

Once again, the second half saw an early spark from Salesians. La Salle's reaction was immediate though as John Falzon's team scored goals at a canter as Salesians lost Dana Ben Moussa through injury.

La Salle now have 10 points while Salesians are still trying to obtain their first points in the league.

Kavallieri joined La Salle at the top of the table after this narrow win over Aloysians who only have three points to show in the standings.

Kavallieri were off to a good start but after trailing 5-3, Aloysians scored three goals to lead 6-5 at half-time.

The second half was pretty much balanced but Aloysians were still strong enough to retain their slim lead. Lara Sammut tied the score in the final minutes for Kavallieri but Nadia Haber scored the winner from close range to the delight of the Kavallieri clan.
