ALP Paola students in project on promoting healthy lifestyles
Visit to Bacău, Romania, as part of Erasmus+ mobility ‘Later is Too Late – Say No to Obesity Now’
A group of six students from the Alternative Learning Programme (ALP) in Paola recently took part in an Erasmus+ mobility hosted in Bacău, Romania, as part of the Erasmusplus KA210 (small-scale partnership) initiative ‘Later is Too Late – Say No to Obesity Now’. They were accompanied by the present author, who was the local project coordinator, as well as educator Dorienne Camilleri.
The project brought together schools and educational institutions from Romania, Türkiye, France and Malta with the aim of tackling obesity and promoting healthier lifestyles among young people. Through seminars, workshops, discussions and practical activities, participants explored various topics, including nutrition, physical activity, mental well-being, body image and healthy eating habits.
Students worked alongside their European peers while attending educational sessions led by health professionals and educators. They also took part in outdoor activities promoting exercise and environmental awareness, including hiking and tree-planting initiatives.
The experience offered participants the opportunity to learn about different approaches to health education across Europe while developing communication, teamwork, and intercultural skills. At the same time they also engaged in cultural activities that celebrated the traditions, music, food and heritage of the participating countries.
For ALP Paola, a school specialising in vocational and applied learning pathways, the mobility provided an ideal opportunity to combine practical learning with personal development. Students were able to apply classroom knowledge in real-life situations while building confidence and independence.
The project had particular significance for Malta, where encouraging healthy lifestyles among young people is a national priority. Through collaboration with international partners, the students gained valuable insights into how healthy choices can positively impact both physical and mental well-being.
The Maltese participants are grateful to Palatul Copiilor Bacău (Bacău Children’s Palace), Romania, for hosting the mobility and especially its principal, Dorin Mihail Cruceanu, and project coordinator Nela Dumea. They also thank ALP Paola school head Josette Spiteri, Erasmus+ head coordinator Emanwel Zammit, EUPA Malta and all the project partners.
