Azzjoni Nazzjonali Leader Josie Muscat said today that balanced budgets are healthy for the economy and there should be a law preventing governments from running a budget deficit.

Dr Muscat was commenting on the latest remarks by Labour leader Alfred Sant who said that achieving a balanced budget by 2010 was not a priority.

Speaking after a meeting which his party had with the Malta Employers’ Association, Dr Muscat said AN wanted to cut red tape for businesses and provide incentives for the creation of wealth. It also felt that the size of the government should be reduced.

He felt there should not be more than four ministers, and some government departments should be merged, such as the VAT and Inland Revenue .
