During the Nationalist Party general council, Dr Gonzi stated that he preferred losing the election rather than fail to take the unpopular measures he is taking in the nation's best interests.

Then what is holding this government from reforming the unjust 1939 rent law? Various matters were discussed during the general council workshops but no reference was made to possible rent reforms.

Does this mean that all property owners whose property is no longer theirs, thanks to the 1939 rent law, are destined to remain solely cash cows of transfer duties while the tenant's relatives inherit property at no cost and also avoid the burden of demanding house loans?

The government hinted a number of times that a White Paper will soon be published on rent reform, but it has not yet seen the light of day. We shall wait and see.
