A full programme of activities for Animal Awareness Day was organised recently at Erin Serracino Inglott Girls Secondary School, Cospicua.

The theme this year was "Share the world... Everyone Matters".

Activities included an exhibition featuring information about taking care of your pet, the importance of neutering cats and dogs, endangered species, animal rights and animal cruelty - namely animal testing, the fur trade, the truth about circuses, etc.

Information about the Island Sanctuary as well as a Literature Corner were also part of this exhibition.

A smaller exhibition of students' work, such as drawings, informative charts, and material downloaded from the Internet, was also set up.

The climax of the activities was the viewing of the video Animal Cruelty in Malta and other Countries, which clearly brought out various aspects of animal cruelty, most of which students were not yet aware of. A discussion followed the viewing and students' response to the video was favourably impressing.

As part of the activities money was collected for the Island Sanctuary. Collections this year raised Lm160. The head of school, Mr Victor Agius, presented the money to Island Sanctuary representative Sylvia Zammit, on her visit to the school on October 7.
