A development application for land at Ta’ Qali to be transformed into an animal cemetery is being processed, Environment Minister Leo Brincat said this evening.

Replying to parliamentary questions by Nationalist MP Mario Galea, Mr Brincat said animals taken to the cemetery will be incinerated in line with European Union regulations which state that animals cannot be buried.

The proposed incinerator is expected to burn up to 50 kilos of carcasses an hour.

The project should be undertaken completely by the private sector on government land, which is expected to be given on a temporary emphyteusis following a call for tenders.
