Animal sanctuaries benefit from €75,000 scheme for free veterinary services
The scheme will cover a range of medical interventions
Thirteen licensed animal sanctuaries will be benefiting from a government fund of more than €75,000 to cover veterinary services, the Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Welfare, Alicia Bugeja Said, has announced.
“We know how much time the volunteers dedicate to these animals, and we want to continue helping them,” Bugeja Said told a press conference.
Animal Welfare director Joseph John Vella explained that the scheme will cover veterinary expenses for medical interventions including neutering, oral health, vaccines, diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose and throat conditions.
He said the scheme will also cover veterinary checks on the animals to ensure they are in good health before being adopted.
“This will strengthen the trust between the sanctuary and the clients, as they would know the animal they are about to adopt will be in good health, or they would be aware of any conditions they have,” Vella said.
The sanctuaries benefitting from the scheme are Animal Care Malta, Association for Abandoned Animals (AAA), Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines (CSAF), Cats and Dogs shelter, Dream Horses, Gozo SPCA, Island Sanctuary Association, Love for Strays, MSPCA, National Cat Society (Tomasina Cat Sanctuary), Noah’s Ark, RMJ Horse Rescue, Stray Animals Support Group (SASG)
