Mr Jerry Polidano (The Sunday Times, June 6) is to be praised for his willingness to stop his car and take the time to reassure a young dog he saw by the road. It was also a lucky coincidence indeed that Mr Fabio Ciappara, the founder of Noah's Ark, should pass by just then and offer to take in the dog.
The SPCA is glad that some animal lovers are taking the initiative to set up their own private sanctuaries and is ready to provide them with technical advice should this be required. Properly run, such sanctuaries may ease the burden on the SPCA and are to be encouraged.
At the same time the SPCA has to correct Mr Polidano as regards its policy concerning stray dogs. It is not true that the SPCA keeps such animals for two weeks before destroying them: all healthy dogs are kept for months and months until they are homed.
Mr Polidano is welcome to visit the SPCA Home in Floriana and see for himself how things are run and how long stray animals are kept there.
