An animal welfare organisation is pleading for much needed financial assistance if it is to continue providing its services.

SOS Animals said its bank balances has whittled down to a mere Lm28 and, with a number of pending bills, the organisation risks facing a dismal exit.

SOS Animals was set up by a group of animal welfare societies in Malta which are involved in both education and field work concerning stray, sick and injured animals.

One of the aims of SOS Animals is to financially help the numerous volunteers carrying out voluntary work in different localities. It also tries to provide funds for the treatment of sick and injured pets whose owners cannot afford to pay vet fees.

A spokesman for the organisation said that its volunteers were carrying out a very difficult task day and night by using nearly all their personal salaries and other resources to help abandoned animals in their locality.

"Recently we had quite a high number of calls for assistance but regretfully could not give immediate response due to lack of funds," the spokesman said.

SOS Animals is also calling out for help to find homes for three dogs that were going to be put down. As a temporary solution the organisation has decided to board these dogs in private kennels. One of the dogs needs an operation.
