Lecture on algebra teaching

The Faculty of Education of the University of Malta will hold a lecture entitled Number And Algebra: Links, Difficulties And Solutions. A Look At Some New Software, Grid Algebra by Dave Hewitt of the University of Birmingham, UK, at Lecture Centre Room 116 on February 26 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The faculty said that many students in schools report experiencing difficulty with algebra and sometimes teachers of younger children do not feel confident with teaching the topic.

Dr Hewitt will argue the case for viewing algebraic activity as a natural part of being human and that we have all worked algebraically throughout our lives. Given this perspective, many difficulties with algebra can be seen as difficulties with notation rather than algebraic activity itself.

Dr Hewitt will explore some new software from the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in the UK which he designed and which develops algebraic work from intuitive ideas about movements within a grid of numbers.

This session will be suitable for teachers from primary and secondary schools along with those interested in mathematics education.

All members of the public, University staff and students are invited.
