Obituary

BUSUTTIL. On May 4, at Mater Dei Hospital, FRANCIS, aged 81, of Valletta, residing in Sliema, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his beloved wife Maria, his only son Carmel and his wife Frances, his granddaughter Anne Marie, and Carlo, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. R.I.P.
The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 9 a.m. for Sacro Cuor parish church, Sliema, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 9.30 a.m. followed by interment in the family grave at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar Tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

MERCIECA. On May 5, at St James Capua Hospital, JOHN, aged 61, passed away peacefully with great courage and peacefully, comforted by the rites of the Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Doreen, his sons Keith and wife Nadia, Clint and fiancée, Anndrea and especially his precious grand-daughter, Nina, as well as all his relatives and friends. R.I.P.
The funeral leaves St James Capua Hospital today at 1.30 p.m. for Our Lady of the Annunciation, Tarxien, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2 p.m., followed by burial at the All Souls Cemetery, (Ta' l-Erwieħ), Tarxien. No flowers by request but donations to The Eden Foundation will be greatly appreciated. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the staff at Boffa Hospital and St James Capua Hospital.

Requiem Masses

The 6 p.m. Masses said tomorrow and on May 13 and 22 at the Ursuline Crèche, Sliema, will be offered for the repose of the soul of KEVIN URRY.

XUEREB - WINIFRED. How can we forget the love and care our beloved mother lavished on us, her words of advice and encouragement and her warm embraces when the need arose. Caring for historic houses

Heritage Malta is organising a course entitled Certificate Course in Caring for Historic Houses which is intended for homeowners, professionals and crafts persons and others involved in the caring of houses of character and historic houses in Malta.

The course will help participants appreciate the urban development of our old towns and villages and the architectural development within them. It will also give guidance on the best practices which are to be used in the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation and use of these houses.

The 10-hour course will take place at Heritage Malta's head office in Merchants Street, Valletta on May 22, 27 and 29 and June 3 and 5 between 6 and 8 p.m. The final session will be held on site in Żejtun.

Heritage Malta is offering this course at €60 (Lm25.75) for the public and €50 (Lm21.46) for members. The closing date for applications is May 15.

Harp concert

Harpist Anne Marie Camilleri Podestà will be performing a selection of some of the most melodious solo music pieces for the harp in a concert on Friday organised by Barocco Cultural Events.

She will play two harps, a beautiful and elaborate gilded orchestral harp and on a Celtic harp. Soprano Marita Bezzina, as a guest artist, will sing some well-known operatic arias to the accompaniment of the harp.

The concert will be held at Sagrestia Vault at the Valletta Waterfront at 8 p.m.

Competativeness workshop

The Commonwealth Workshop on Competitiveness Strategies for Small States opened at the University in Tal-Qroqq yesterday.

The course is organised by the Islands and Small States Institute of the University of Malta in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Foreign Ministry of Malta and forms part of the Malta-Commonwealth Third Country Training Programme.

It is aimed at disseminating knowledge and provide training on competitiveness strategies covering a variety of themes with a focus on small states.

Another objective is to enable participants to benefit from the sharing of ideas and experiences.

The workshop, which runs until May 16, is intended for officials at senior and middle management levels, operating in private and public sector institutions.

Participants hail from Singapore, Ghana, Malaysia, Maldives, Samoa, Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, Botswana, Sri Lanka and Malta.

Values campaign

Moviment Kattoliku Studenti Universitarji (MKSU) are holding a campaign on the theme Values Matter at the University's Quadrangle until Friday.

The campaign, which is being organised for the second consecutive year, consists of no less than 24 inspirational phrases or quotations intended to encourage every student who reads them to reflect on the messages being conveyed.

Values Matter will be the final activity organised by MKSU before this year's final examinations and also marks the end of tenure of the 2007/2008 MKSU executive committee.

Mission fund

Sylvia Ebejer has been elected president of the Mission Fund until next March.

The other committee members are Joan Gabriele, vice-president, Speranza Xuereb, secretary, Ian Azzopardi, treasurer, John Sammut, public relations officer and Joe Mifsud and Philip Micallef.

The fund will hold a bazaar at ex-Sperry, Labour Avenue, Naxxar (near Bank of Valletta) from May 12 to 17 opening from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Many items will be sold at clear-away prices.

Funds raised from the bazaar will go to help poor people in Third World countries.

Music and singing in Holy Books

The Culture Commission of the Archdiocese will hold a conference on music and singing in the Holy Books at the Catholic Institute, Floriana on May 14 at 7 p.m. Fr Anton Abela will be leading the conference.

Cake sale at Balzan

The Malta Hospice Movement will hold a cake sale at its premises in 39, Good Shepherd Avenue, Balzan until Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. All proceeds will go towards the services given free of charge to patients suffering from cancer or motor neurone disease and to their families.

Archbishop prayers

Archbishop Paul Cremona will be reading the prayer to Our Lady of Pompeii at the Jesuit Church in Merchants Street, Valletta on Thursday at noon.

On that day Mass will be celebrated at 6.30, 7, 7.30, 8, 8.30, 9, 10 and 11 a.m. and 6.15 p.m.
