Obituary

AGIUS. On February 17, at Mater Dei Hospital, JULIET MAY, née Birmingham, aged 72, widow of Joseph (ex-employee, Central Bank of Malta), passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church, after a long and brave fight with cancer. She leaves to mourn her loss her devoted sons RichardPaul and Anthony, her mother Elizabeth, her sister Margaret and her husband Louis, their six children Joanne, Jacqui, Christine, Richard, Karen and Maureen and their respective families, all of Australia, the family of her late brother Charles, also of Australia, her late husband's brothers Fr Emmanuel Agius of the Holy Family church, Addleston, Surrey, UK, Vincent and his children Tony, his wife Carol, and Christine and her husband Mario, other relatives and many dear friends. Mass praesente cadavere will be said at St Mary's parish church, Attard, tomorrow at 9 a.m., followed by interment at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to The Malta Hospice Movement, Balzan, will be greatly appreciated. Rest in the arms of the Lord, dearest Mummy.

CASHA. On February 17, JOE, aged 74, went to meet the Risen Lord, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Carmen, née Sapiano, his son Conrad and his wife Anne, his granddaughters Claire and Christine, his sister Maria and her husband Michael, his brother Emmanuel and his wife Giorgina, his wife's brothers and sisters, all their families, many relatives and friends. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

CASSAR. On February 18, at his residence in Swieqi, PHILIP, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Vivienne, née Cristiano, his sisters Doris and Jane and their respective families, his in-laws Louis and his wife Yvonne, Yvonne and her husband Aldo, Joe and his wife Myra, his beloved nephews and nieces, besides other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 1.30 p.m. for Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish church, Balluta, St Julians, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2 p.m., followed by interment at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. Donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

FABRI. On February 17, SIMON, aged 47, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his great loss his wife Teresa, née Camilleri, his beloved daughter Francesca, his mother Helen, née Sapienza, widow of Joe Fabri, his sister Sandra and her husband Karl Fabri, his brother Jason and Christiane, his parents-in-law Marcelle and Walter Camilleri, his in-laws Angela and Chris, Nicky and Simon, his nephews and nieces Rachel and Andrew, Kristina and Matthew, Julia and Hannah, other relatives and friends. Mass praesente cadavere will be said today at 2 p.m. at Ta' l-Ibraġ parish church followed by interment at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

LAPIRA. On February 17, at Mater Dei Hospital, MARK, aged 58, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his adoring wife, Annalise, née Samuel, his sisters Fiona and her husband Albert Caruana, Marion and her husband Marcus John Scicluna Marshall, and Judy and her husband Andrew Cauchi, his parents-in-law George and Nanette, his brother-in-law Anthony, devoted nephews and nieces, Kurt, Dieter, Kerstin, Marcus, Matthew, Luke, Rebecca, Leah and Tamsin, as well as relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital today at 8.40 a.m. for St Julians parish church, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 9.15 a.m., followed by interment in the family grave at the Santa Marija Addolorata Cemetery. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

SCICLUNA. On February 18, at Gozo General Hospital, CARMELO, aged 85, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Lorenza, his son Loreto and his wife Rose, his grandchildren Christopher, Karl and David, his brothers-in-law Francis and Anthony Sultana and their respective families. The funeral leaves Gozo General Hospital tomorrow at 3.30 p.m. for Our Lady of Loreto parish church, Għajnsielem, Gozo, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 4 p.m., followed by interment in the family vault at Għajnsielem cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Arka Respite Centre, Għajnsielem, will be greatly appreciated. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

VELLA. On February 18, JOHN of St Paul's Bay (Director, Ballut Blocks Ltd), aged 80, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his children David, Godwin and Lorraine, his beloved granddaughter Francesca, his brothers Vincent and Nazzareno, his sister Rita, their families, in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow at 2.15 p.m. for St Mary's parish church, Mġarr, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 3 p.m., followed by interment at St Paul's Bay cemetery. Theology Faculty Day

Fr Louis Caruana, SJ, will give a lecture on the way the Church looked upon Charles Darwin's theories of evolution and how its position changed over time. The lecture will be held at Attard parish centre (next door to Attard parish church) on Saturday at 11 a.m. Fr Caruana lectures at Heythorp College, London, and was previously a lecturer at the Gregorian University of Rome.

The lecture forms part of a programme of activities the University of Malta's Faculty of Theology is holding to mark Faculty Day and to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth in 1809 and the 150th anniversary of his publication of The Origin Of Species.

The talk is open to Faculty lecturers, present and former students and all those interested in the subject.

The lecture will be preceded by Mass at 9.30 a.m. at Attard parish church celebrated by Archbishop Paul Cremona, patron of the faculty.

Public meeting

A public meeting to discuss the national strategy for policy and abatement measures, relating to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, will be held tomorrow at Vassalli Hall, Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, at 6.30 p.m.

The Climate Change Committee, appointed by the government, is inviting those interested to attend. The document can be viewed on www.climatechange.gov.mt. For more information can call on 2295 2128.
