Mini-council elections on March 27
Elections for eight of the new mini-councils will be held on March 27.
The elections will be held for Bubaqra (Żurrieq), Fleur-De-Lys (Birkirkara), Kappara (San Ġwann), Madliena (Is-Swieqi), Paceville (San Ġiljan), Santa Luċija (Kerċem), Xlendi (Il-Munxar) and Marsalforn (Iż-Żebbuġ).
In all, 16 localities will get the so-called Administrative Committees for Communities, directly elected by the people. They will get funds from the budgets allocated to their respective local councils.
The localities are areas that are somewhat cut off from the towns or villages which their councils serve or have their own particular needs.
The other eight localities are Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq (Naxxar), Swatar (Msida), Burmarrad (St Paul's Bay), Baħrija (Rabat), Tal-Virtù (Rabat), Ħal Farruġ (Luqa) St Peters (Żabbar) and Guardamangia (Pietà).
The committees will have five members each. They will determine the use of the funds assigned to them and may apply for EU funds.
The electoral process will be different in that voting time will be shorter than in normal council elections and vote counting would take place in the localities. Residents will be able to vote according to their address in the electoral register. They will use their ID cards.
Nominations will be received at the Electoral Commission's Office in Valletta and at the ID Cards Office at 28A, St Francis Square, Victoria, between Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m.
Applicants must submit the prescribed nomination form duly completed, deposit €90 and produce their identity card. Nomination forms can be obtained from the same offices as from today.
