Sliema Wanderers` Nigerian striker Orosco Anonam is on the verge of joining Cyprus champions Apoel Nicosia.
Sources close to the player told The Times yesterday that Apoel, who last month clinched their 17th title, have been scrutinising Anonam`s progress over the last few weeks and one of their scouts came to run the rule over the player in Sliema`s 1-0 defeat to Birkirkara in the Rothmans Trophy final.
The 22-year-old Anonam, who played for Naxxar Lions when he first came to Malta, has been linked with moves to different foreign clubs over the past few months, including Swiss FC St Gallen and AJ Auxerre of France but Apoel Nicosia have now emerged as the Nigerian`s most probable future destination.
A spokesman for Sliema Wanderers said the club has already reached a verbal agreement with Apoel over the transfer of Anonam and the deal is expected to be rubber-stamped in the coming days.
Before joining Sliema two months into the last season, Anonam spent a short spell with Hungarian club SC Vasas who were forced to offload many of their first-team players due to financial problems.
