White bands worn by people who believe in the aims of the international movement Global Call To Action Against Poverty (GCAP) are available in Malta from L-Arka, in Valletta.
The aim of GCAP is to force world leaders to place the issue of poverty firmly on the agenda and, at three different meetings this year, stand by their commitments to reach the UN's millennium development goals by 2015.
All around the world people are being asked to wear a white band to symbolise their adherence to this mission.
July 1 is the first important date when the white band should be worn, the promoters say. Internationally, events have been organised for people to gather together and make their presence felt. StoPoverty! Neqirdu l-Faqar!, the Maltese initiative making part of GCAP, will also be holding such an event in Malta, details of which will be given later.
