The opposition has accepted the government's nomination of Anton Tabone, MP as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Labour leader Alfred Sant said when contacted yesterday the opposition agreed with Mr Tabone's nomination, who was now, unlike in 1998, an elected member of the House.

As Mr Tabone will be retaining his seat, he will lose his original vote as an MP and will only have a casting vote, effectively reducing the government majority to four.

The last Speaker who was also an MP was Daniel Micallef, in the mid-1980s.

Asked whether he and Dr Fenech Adami had discussed the deputy speaker, the Labour leader said this post would be discussed at a later stage.
