Torri Mamo, the 17th century fortified country home that has been restored and is now held in guardianship by Din l-Art Helwa, has been embellished by a comprehensive and colourful interpretation scheme that encompasses its architectural and historic value.

Several free standing illustrated panels also depict the development of fortifications around Malta and Gozo and highlight the 12 historic properties that Din l-Art Helwa have restored and hold in trust.

The interpretation scheme has been sponsored by Gasan Mamo Insurance Agency, a company which is corporate sponsor of Din l-Art Helwa and which has been associated with heritage work before, having provided the main funding for the organisation's restoration of Dwejra Tower, in Gozo.

Speaking at the inauguration of the interpretation scheme, the executive president of Din l-Art Helwa, Martin Scicluna said that interpretation schemes for historic properties allow visitors to gain further understanding and appreciation of valuable historic and cultural assets. The scheme is user-friendly and has been laid out in a colourful series of panels.

"Din l-Art Helwa relies entirely on the generosity of sponsors like Gasan Mamo Insurance Agency to continue not just with the restoration of historic sites such as Torri Mamo, but also with making them accessible and comprehensible to our visitors."

Torri Mamo is a unique example in Malta of a 17th century fortified family home. It was built by the Mamo family in 1657 to protect family members and neighbours from the incursions of enemy Turks. It is unique because it has no fewer than 16 façades, is built in the form of a St Andrew's cross, has a circular internal stone hall and is surrounded by a moat.

It is open every morning daily, including Sundays, and can be found on the road to St Thomas Bay from Zejtun. Its volunteer warden is Alfred Depasquale, who tends to the site daily.

Anybody wishing to support Din l-Art Helwa in its work to safeguard Malta's cultural heritage either by becoming a member or by enlisting as a volunteer is asked to call 2122 0358 or calling at 133 Melita Street, Valletta.
