The Malta Labour Party said yesterday Israel's decision to remove Yasser Arafat, the President of the Palestinian Authority, from his headquarters in Ramallah could serve to fan the flames in the Middle East.

Foreign affairs spokesman Leo Brincat said Mr Arafat was elected democratically and, as such, he symbolised the unity, the aspirations, the pain and the exile of the Palestinians.

Alternattiva Demokratika called on the government to express its disagreement with the Israeli government's decision to expel Mr Arafat from the Palestinian territories, saying it would be a blow to peace efforts.

It also condemned the military occupation of Palestinian territory and terrorism.
