Following the successful educational visit to the Wardija olive tree plantation, the Year 3 pupils of Dun Xand Cortis Primary School of St Venera marked Arbor Day on January 24 with an olive sapling planting ceremony.

The inclement weather did nothing to deter the children from presenting a colourful and interesting programme which coincided with the election of the new school council. Poems, mimes, plays and songs were performed in the school hall by all the classes, from the youngest kindergarten to Year 3 classes.

The sun peeped out of the clouds long enough for the olive planting ceremony to take place in the school gardens. Sam Cremona gave an interesting talk about the importance of trees, specifically the olive tree, in the life of mankind. Mr Cremona kindly donated some of the trees himself and the children sponsored the rest.

At the end of the ceremony guests sampled the delicious locally-produced oil served on crunchy bread.
