Archbishop Charles Scicluna visited the prisons on Sunday.
He spent time with the inmates, met the staff and was taken on a tour of the facility at Corradino.
"His kind words and presence brought encouragement and hope to everyone he met," the Malta Correctional Services Agency said on its Facebook page.
The archbishop - who was also marking 12 years since being appointed a Bishop in Malta - also celebrated mass there, in the presence of staff and inmates.
Scicluna was appointed Auxiliary Bishop in October 2012 and went on to be made Archbishop three years later, in 2015.
One of his first official visits as bishop was to the Corradino Correctional Facility.
