Archbishop visits the GWU
Archbishop’s visit highlights solidarity, workers’ dignity, and social justice - union
Archbishop Charles Scicluna has visited the Workers’ Memorial Building, meeting the leaders of the General Workers' Union and staff. He also visited the Union Print newsroom.
GWU Secretary General Josef Bugeja described the visit as an important sign that the world of work and spiritual values can go hand in hand. He stressed that through such collaboration, society can move towards becoming more just, humane, and based on solidarity, especially in a time of significant social change.
Archbishop Scicluna praised the GWU’s ongoing work to improve working conditions, particularly its efforts in supporting workers from third countries. He highlighted that the world of work is rapidly evolving due to technological advancements, including Artificial Intelligence, and that this requires continuous adaptation. However, he emphasised that such changes must be guided by ethical principles that safeguard human dignity and ensure a secure future for workers.
The Archbishop also spoke about the wages, noting that they should not be seen merely as payment for work, but to provide workers with peace of mind, enabling them to live with dignity, support their families, and plan their future. He also outlined Malta’s low birth rate and stressed the need to create conditions that help families have children.
Bugeja warned about the growing trend of individualism in society, where people are increasingly focusing on the “I” rather than the “we.” He cautioned that this shift threatens core values such as solidarity, respect, and community spirit. He reiterated that solidarity is not optional but a moral obligation and a cornerstone of social justice.
He further emphasised the importance of preserving Maltese values such as family and community, while remaining open and respectful towards everyone. In this context, he strongly condemned racism, describing it as a direct attack on human dignity, and called for collective action to combat it.
GWU Secretary General (designate) Kevin Camilleri added that there are points of convergence between the Church and trade unions, particularly in terms of solidarity and dialogue. He stressed that strong social dialogue remains essential for continued improvements in workers’ conditions.
The visit concluded with the presentation of a commemorative token to the Archbishop.
