The female figure wrapped in a fusion of bright colours is the theme of Nicoline Sagona's first exhibition, which is being inaugurated this morning by Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono.

Titled Female Icons: A Colour Spectacle, the display of 24 paintings in the ministry's exhibitions hall will remain open until April 18.

The young Gozitan artist hails from an artistic family and though her style is different, she has learnt a lot from her father, Gozitan painter, sculptor and designer Joseph Sagona, and her elder brother Mark, who is also an artist.

In her first personal exhibition of paintings, Ms Sagona has focused on the female figure, with bright colours dominating her canvas. The works are executed in a mixture of oil and acrylics, with some incorporating a collage.

An interesting characteristic is the actual application and inclusion of fabric in her works, creating detailed folds and a sense of rhythm.

Ms Sagona paints over the glued fabric, accentuating the folds.

The exhibition is open for viewing from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. to noon.
