Assistant head of school admits to stealing money from her colleagues

Accused was caught red-handed taking cash from staff handbags and wallets

An assistant head of school, who is currently suspended, pleaded guilty to stealing some €300 from handbags and wallets belonging to her colleagues.

The Birkirkara woman was brought before the court on Thursday afternoon where she was accused of theft aggravated by the fact that she is a public official. She pleaded guilty to the charges.

The name of the school is being withheld under court orders. After the court turned down the ban on her name, the media was asked to withhold the name.

Police inspector Italo Mizzi received a report from another assistant head of the same school in which it was alleged that several staff members found cash missing from their wallets and handbags between November 24 and 28. The same assistant head caught his colleague red-handed on November 28.

In total, some €300 had been stolen.

The school principal sent for the accused, and she confessed to the crime some weeks after the report was filed in December.

The woman pleaded guilty to the charges and was handed a three-year probation order. She was also handed a three-year treatment order.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech presided.

AG lawyer Clive Aquilina prosecuted, assisted by police inspector Italo Mizzi.

Lawyer Edmond Cuschieri assisted the accused.
