Malta's only remaining railway embankment of note is to be restored and incorporated into a walking heritage trail leading to an information centre, Attard local council announced on Wednesday. 

The embankment, which abuts the Corinthia Palace Hotel and lies just 100 metres away from San Anton Palace, was built in 1882 as part of Malta's railway system, which operated until 1931. 

It will be restored with the co-financing help of €531,000 in EU funding, with parliamentary secretary Aaron Farrugia handing the local council a letter of confirmation for the project on Wednesday. 

Once restoration works are complete, visitors will be able to walk along the railway track to Ġnien l-Istazzjon, where an informationcentre will be set up as a replica of the original train station for Attard. 

It will complement a railway museum planned for Birkirkara and provide tourists who visit Attard with information about cultural and historical landmarks in Attard, Balzan and Lija.
