Australia is warning travellers planning to visit the beaches of Bali and other sites in Indonesia about possible attacks in the southeast Asian nation.

It says recent indications suggest that terrorists may be in the advanced stages of preparing attacks in Indonesia.

The government is urging travellers to exercise a "high degree of caution", but has retained the advisory at level two of four levels

On Sunday it issued a similar warning for the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

An officer with Indonesia's National Police said they'll talk to Australia to find out the basis of the warning, but says Indonesia is safe.

We always receive such information, said Officer Agus Rianto, adding that the commitment of the police is the same -- which is to safeguard the people.

Australia issued an earlier warning on January 14 following a deadly attack in Jakarta which killed eight people, including the attackers.
