Average of one rape report a week last year

Nationalist MP asked about the number of rapes of women

Fifty-two cases of rapes of women were reported to the police last year, the home affairs minister told parliament on Tuesday.

That equates to an average of one report a week.

Minister Byron Camilleri was replying to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Graziella Attard Previ.

No figures for 2024 were immediately available, but the minister had previously told parliament that there were 49 reports of rape in 2023. At the time, Camilleri said he feared that not all rapes were reported to the authorities because of social and cultural factors.
