The partners of Deloitte and Touche have announced that they will be sponsoring an award for excellence in auditing studies in the name of their former partner, Mark de Giorgio, to coincide with the first anniversary of his death.

The Mark de Giorgio Award for Excellence in Auditing Studies will be presented to the Maltese student who achieves first placing in the auditing final exams under the new Malta Institute of Accountants joint examination scheme being held jointly with the English ACCA institute.

The award will include a cash sum.

The award coincides with a number of initiatives that the firm was taking to commemorate the first anniversary. These initiatives also include the introduction of an annual award to one of the employees for outstanding performance.

The Malta Institute of Accountants has welcomed the award and will be incorporating it into its annual formal presentation of awards and certificates ceremony.

Mark de Giorgio joined Deloitte and Touche in 1985 and was one of the key partners who steered the firm from a mid-sized practice to one of the most predominant accounting firms on Malta. He died at the age of 47 on July 18, 2001.
